Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is BoatClass®?

Okay, so we think you’re gonna like this…BoatClass is an on-the-water training program where you do most of the driving. Launched earlier this year by Brunswick Corporation, BoatClass teaches boating safety and maneuvering skills to beginner and experienced boaters alike. Certified US Coast Guard captains lead 3-hour basic and intermediate courses starting at only $149; so classes are convenient and affordable. Not to mention – effective… Before taking BoatClass our average customer puts their boating skills and confidence at around a 3 on a scale of 1-10. This number jumps to about a 7 after taking a class.

How much does BoatClass cost?

This can seem a little confusing at first, so bear with me…We charge by the seat, and you receive a discount for purchasing multiple seats in a class. So here’s what we mean exactly:

Basic BoatClass® – Each Basic class has 4 seats max, available on a first come first-served basis. To purchase 1 seat, the cost is $149. To purchase multiple seats (up to an entire boat of 4 people), the cost is $149 for the first seat plus $50 for each additional seat you purchase. So 2 seats cost $199, 3 seats cost $249, and 4 seats (i.e. an entire boat) cost $299.

Intermediate BoatClass® – Each Intermediate class has 3 seats max. To purchase 1 seat, the cost is $199. To purchase multiple seats (up to an entire boat of 3 people), the cost is $199 for the first seat plus $75 for each additional seat you purchase. So 2 seats cost $274, and 3 seats (i.e. an entire boat) cost $349.

Can I reserve an entire boat if it's just me or if I don't have the max number of people to fill the boat in my party?

So glad you asked; absolutely! In fact we have customers that do it all the time and we encourage it. We understand that some people prefer more 1-on-1 time with the Captain, while others like the experience of learning in a group atmosphere. That’s why we make both options available.

How do I sign up?

Just choose the Location closest to you right here on our website. Pick the Basic or Intermediate course – whichever you feel better suits your experience level. And choose the date and time that best fits with your schedule. It’s that easy!

What size boat is used for training?

The BoatClass® boat is a 21′ Bayliner deck boat with Mercury 150 hp outboard motor. In fact, here’s a picture of it.

Do I get anything for completing the class?

Of course! You’ll receive a certificate of completion immediately following the class along with a BoatClass® decal and floatable keychain. Plus we’re currently giving away free swag if you post photos of your experience on IG or Facebook and leave us a Google review! Text (610) 613-9216 or email [email protected] to let us know you’ve finished your homework – along with your address – and we’ll ship you your free gear.

Is the BoatClass® curriculum offered online?

Not yet… As a relatively new offering in the market, we chose to emphasize 100% on-water training first because we feel there’s no substitute for hands-on learning. When thinking about future expansion, we definitely have our eye on interactive online learning – so stay tuned!

Does BoatClass administer boating licenses, fulfill rental training requirements, or count toward discounts on insurance?

BoatClass does not administer boating licenses. Nor do we fulfill rental training requirements or insurance requirements in any official capacity. However we encourage you to check with your local boat rental or insurance provider to see if they will honor your BoatClass training toward any requirements or special offerings.

Do you offer a veteran's and first responder's discount on Basic BoatClass?

We absolutely do. Veterans and First Responders enjoy a 10% discount. Thank you for your service!

Do you offer training on my own boat?

We do! Check out our newest program OnMyBoat for more details about participating locations and/or give us a call today at (610) 613-9216 and Makura (a real person) will get you all squared away.

Is there a class for kids?

Not at this time. BoatClass participants must be 18 or older.
